Courses / 2013 Spring - Write the Sustainable Way (Sean - Anthony - Jose)

1. What is the Action?

The goal of this action is to ultimately provide IES with a sustainable way for students to write during their classes. How many times have students either asked for a pen or pencil at the beginning of class, or even left many of their writing utensils behind after class only for them to be discarded? It has been recorded that a total of 10 billion of plastic pens end up in landfills throughout the globe (EcoPaper). My plan is simple, find a sustainable way for students to be provided with biodegradable pens and pencils which they can use during class. This plan can go two ways. First, IES can provide students with biodegradable writing utensils upon their arrival, or second, even more sustainable assign both a pen and pencil to each desk in IES for students use or provide a basket where students can feel free to help themselves to a pen or pencil before class.

1.1. Similar actions from previous semesters__''

Similar to other past proposal, the Write the Right Way project can be used in addition or can implemented separately in relation to past actions taken by students. Similar to the Welcome Kit idea, the Write the Right Way project can work in addition to the Welcome Kit by adding biodegradable pens and pencils to the starter kit.

1.2. Why the similar action did not succeed in previous semesters __''

A lack of investment in the long term success of similar actions may be the cause of their failure. Placing too much of a financial burden on IES without student startup aid can cause projects to not last more than a semester if they even get that far. Security measures were not planned out well enough for the Bike Rental to last, especially given the small number of units to start.

1.3. SWOT Analysis __''

Strengths

  • Provide eco-friendly way for students to take notes during class
  • Establishing a daily sustainable presence everyday
  • Students save money on pens and pencils throughout the semester
  • The biodegradable aspect of the pens and pencils follows the "cradle to cradle" format

Weaknesses

  • Puts the burden of buying biodegradable pens and pencils on IES
  • No guarantee the students will use the pens and pencils
  • Variable lifetime on the writing utensils, may not last the entire semester

Opportunities

  • Provide a way for students to be more ecologically aware, and encourages them to spread this awareness to peers
  • Provide students with daily presence of the issue of sustainability
  • Provide a gateway for more of student material to be eco-friendly
  • Advertising for companies selling sustainable products
  • Marketing for IES Barcelona

Threats

  • Students might steal excess stock of pens and pencils
  • Students might prefer other name brand pens to write with
  • Students may lose the pen or pencil, which is of course biodegradable, but may lead to use of other non biodegradable products
  • IES Barcelona may not be convinced to pay for the entire cost

One way to alleviate some weakness is for IES to include cost of one pen and one pencil in the semester tuition fee. This small added charge could equal long term success by aiding IES in sustaining payments in subsequent semesters.
It is impossible to guarantee the pens will be used by the students, but we hope that with some proactive students and widespread awareness of green motives throughout IES, the pens will gain popularity.

1.4. Feedback Loops __''

IES Advertising Balancing Feedback Loop

New students receive biodegradable pens and pencils
Students use the writing materials
Students begin to gain awareness on sustainable habits, bring them back to the United States
When students use pens in the United States/discuss sustainable actions, other students see/hear them finding out about IES
New students who find out about IES may apply to IES
New students now apply and attend IES
New students receive biodegradable pens and pencils

1.5. Advertising __''

Advertising could be done in the IES brochure and website, to promote its commitment to sustainability as an institution. Also Moodle could provide student reminders about their sustainability habits, and to not forget their pens or information as to how to acquire a new one if lost.

2. Why does this action make things more sustainable?

Biodegradable pens and pencils are a great way to eliminate toxic waste produced from discarded plastic and metal ones.
It also creates more awareness in students, and is a great way to jumpstart involvement in sustainable actions.

2.1. Potential Costs__''

  • We would want to buy pens from a LOIS company.
  • This action would save more money than it would cost in theory with an appropriate strategy and goal.
  • IES would provide the money for the pens rather than having students buy more expensive, and less ecologically smart options.
  • A cheap idea can go a long way from a sustainable viewpoint.
  • Another option is for IES to include cost of one pen and one pencil in tuition fee, small added charge for long term success and less burden on IES to sustain payments in subsequent semester

3. How will you implement it?

3.1. "Cradle to Cradle" design__''

“It models human industry on nature's processes viewing materials as nutrients circulating in healthy, safe metabolisms. It suggests that industry must protect and enrich ecosystems and nature's biological metabolism while also maintaining a safe, productive technical metabolism for the high-quality use and circulation of organic and technical nutrients.1 Put simply, it is a holistic economic, industrial and social framework that seeks to create systems that are not only efficient but also essentially waste free.” Wikipedia

Going off this in-depth, yet simple to understand information our cradle to cradle design is simple. Promote a product that when created not only can be recycled, but directly reinforces a sustainable lifestyle. A pen manufactured at a company which idolizes "cradle to cradle" standards, is able to be utlized as a fully functioning writing utensil used to completion. Upon that, the 100% fully degradeable item is placed anywhere on earth. Finally, the pen not only degrades but contains seeds of another plant serving as a beneficial form of upcycling.

3.2. How Will This Action Be Sustained When You Are Not Here? __''

It is up to IES to decide whether or not to continue with the action after the initial semester. Hopefully a faculty representative would be willing to continue contacting the production company, or if the Sustainability club works out well they could take some of the workload as well.

5. Who Will do What?

In implementing this action a student or IES staff must contact Factory Direct: 1-866-222-0949. Speaking with the representatives, I can personally attest that there is margin for negotiation. If done properly, the figures provided may be negotiated to lower prices.

In purchasing materials, the funds must come from IES or donations made by students. Another alternative option could be a slight increase in student’s tuition to cover the charges. Considering the number of students in IES, this should not be a gradual increase and only affect student’s tuition slightly.

5.1. A Joint Effort on All Accounts. Meetings and shared intelligence were reinforced.__''

Template Letter to Director of IES

To whom it may concern,

I am writing in behalf of XXXX to inform you about a sustainable proposition for IES. Being a student at I.E.S, since day one I have noted the eco-friendly environment the organization supports. In continuation of this culture, I propose a plan that will enhance this sustainable culture within the organization.

I ask, how many pens or pencils do you have on your desk as you read this email? Now, how many pieces are in your pen? I bet more than one. In America alone a total of 1.5 billion pens are disposed annually, which cannot be recycled. Considering the incapability of the recycling of most plastics, I propose a plan to help the globe reduce the plastic waste. I propose that I.E.S considers stop purchasing regular pens and invest in biodegradable pens. WAIT. You might be thinking this proposition may be too costly; however, depending on what kind of pen’s and pencils are purchased, this may be a more economical option. The price of one recyclable pen is about $.057 cents (US Currency). Below this email, I have provided you with a link in where our plan is laid out in detail. I strongly suggest I.E.S take the right step and teach its student’s the Right Way to Write.

Thanks,
