IES Sustainability Class Facebook Page

1. Action name

IES Sustainability Class Facebook page

1.1. What

The action is creating an IES Sustainability class Facebook page. I created a Facebook page that we have invited our fellow students to join. I posted articles on environmentally friendly living in the city.

1.2. Why this action makes things more sustainable?

The action is improving the sustainability of IES abroad because it is putting more information into students hands about how they can be more environmentally friendly. By having more information about to reduce consumption we are reducing dependency on things that are environmentally unfriendly. It's helpful for students to be able to post on the facebook page about upcoming class projects or places that sell local produce, so they can benefit the community we are living in. Also by having information on living in an eco-friendly way students can reduce their ecological/water footprints. The long term affects are hopefully that future groups of students will keep up the page and past students can continue to post into the group with helpful advice. It will be sort of like a continuing information base with new and old students posting information.

1.2.1. SWOT Analysis

StrengthsThe site will provide an outlet for information sharing, *possibly encourage people to live in an environmentally friendly way, *help local businesses and markets

WeaknessesPeople may not use the site *If we don't stay on uploading information the site will not be updated

Opportunities
Great way for students to share information *could provide an outlet for sharing information after the semester is over between new students and old students

Threats*That people will stop using the site

(see free_SWOT_analysis_template.pdf)

1.2.2. Feedback loops

Identify potential loops produced by your action (reinforcing, balancing, lagged), and eventually, draw them in a systems analysis diagram if it makes the explanation clearer

1.2.3. Potential Benefits

The potential benefits are that students have a place to post information that other students might not know. Especially in sustainability class we have talked about how many students didn't know how to recycle when they arrived in Barcelona or didn't know that the water was safe for drinking. This creates a forum for students new and old to post information that others might want to know. In short term we are providing information on changing habits in Barcelona, that will have a positive effect while we are here. And long term we are creating an information source where new and old students can share information from their time in Barcelona, that may make it easier for new students to be environmentally friendly.

1.2.4. Potential Costs

The potential costs are time. It takes time to find articles and information but these time restraints are minimal.

1.3. How

In a perfect world, people in the class will post on the site with information and articles that would be helpful for the class. As of now we have created the site and invited our classmates. Next semester we hope to have a list of the new sustainability class and invite them to the group so they can share information with each other and look back on what we have provided. Until our departure we will continue adding information and encouraging our classmates to add helpful information.

1.3.1. "Cradle to Cradle" design

This action does not provide waste. We are not using any paper or resources other then the internet.

1.3.2. Questions for the unified survey

If the survey was not completed a question would be--
"Would you use the IES sustainability facebook page to share information?
"Do you think it would be helpful to have a page with information on living sustainability in the city?"

1.3.3. Incentives

The incentives are that you are sharing and providing information. I think people will want to use the site because it's a good source of information.

1.3.4. Relationship with the "Sustainability Club" (SC)

Possibly trying to post the page on the Sustainability club page, and hopefully someone from next semesters sustainability class will immediately take on the Facebook page as their continued action so people from next semester can benefit from it.

1.3.5. How will this action be sustained when you are not here?

I'm hoping that the action will be sustained by new students who we add to the group posting information. The page could be maintained by a student who needs to complete a continued action also. I will also monitor the site to make sure that we are providing any help we can for questions new students might have.

1.3.6. Document format

If you produced some documents to support your action, did you choose some document format which can be edited with multiplatform FLOSS tools without loosing the layout? [Multiplatform = at least, the main three O.S.: GNU/Linux, Mac OSX & MS Windows]. For instance, for word documents, .odt or similar (odf) is better choice than MS Word .doc/.docx documents, since odt/odf are standards format for office documents recognized internationally by the ISO (ISO/IEC 26300:2006), and editable by OpenOffice, among others (or MS Office with a Plugin). Or for images: .svg for vectorial graphics (editable by Inkscape), or .xcf for bitmaps (editable by GIMP), etc.

1.4. Time-sheet / Chronogram

I chose this copyright because I want people to be able to share and continue the action after we leave barcelona.

85 agluskerI think a Facebook page is great because as we know students are contstantly checking and updating their facebook on the IES computers. I think there could have been a little more collaboration in terms of what was posted on the blogs and what was posted on your Facebook page. It is however, a great forum to publicize all happenings of the IES sustainability club.
96 Brian McNevinA Facebook page is a fantastic way to inform other students about sustainable living. Everyone has one and uses it often. To add with Megan about including it on our class page, perhaps IES could include it on moodle or their homepage.
84 carlafCreating a Facebook page is a smart way to inform students but what about an older demographic that might not be so familiar or savvy with Facebook? The websites are a great way of improving sustainability especially if this is updated frequently.
95 CFaheyA Facebook page is a great way to connect with other students in IES and also share links to blogs and send out invitations for other events such as the Video Forums and the Contests. This is very sustainable because it will remain on Facebook for future students because they can then access information, links, and blogs from this year.
89 gnardithis is a smart idea because we all know the majority of people our age use facebook and spend a lot of time on it. The facebook page should be open for everyone to invite anyone they want to on facebook so this can spread beyond IES.
93 Kmacdonald4I think a facebook page is a great way to reach all the students of IES but could be hard to reach the local community or different demographics. I agree with carla that facebook does not allow you to reach out to demographics that may not be familiar with, or have a facebook page.
86 m.bernsteinJust like a blog, this page is a great way to spread knowledge. You should post the link on this page so future students can easily find your page to continue this action and keep spreading the word. good work
92 obiajuluFacebook is an awesome forum to spread knowledge because everyone uses it. However I think that this group should not be closed.
95 Sarah ColeI think this is a good idea and I think students will take advantage of using this. I agree that the page should be open to everyone. Students enjoy and learn from others experiences and this will be especially helpful when students first arrive in barcelona.
93 seantubridyEverybody and their mother has a Facebook, so it is definitely the best way to spread information. As someone mentioned already, it would be ideal to combine all of the blogs into one facebook page. Also try deleting some of the unnecessary updates from the Facebook page so it doesnt get bogged down with update notifications. Good work on the page though
93 SolomonBPThis sounds good. The SC already has a facebook page and website, but if you could provide links to our website on your fb page, that would be awesome, and I'll be sure the SC website has links to your page. FB is so popular that it is probably the best and most effective resource we have in spreading sustainable living methods in BCN, and promoting different aspects and experiences within the city.
93 steph.eastlakeI think that facebook is a great place to keep everyone informed about sustainable living. I think we can work together to put all the blog sites on the facebook page so they will be easily accessed by students.
94 vsienkieI love our facebook page and think it is a great way to spead information quickly. I think we should add this to the moodle page in order to get more publicity.
89 vydraThis is a really cool idea, especially considering how often people go on Facebook these days. I think if you had a little more structure to your Facebook page instead of it being simply an open forum, it would definitely increase the sustainability of your action. Good idea.

2.12 IES Sustainability Class Facebook Page (Mary Bowerman - Vanessa Sienkiewicz) Good The overall idea of use the viral effect of facebook social network. Improvable 1.1. (& 1.3) "The action is creating an IES Sustainability class Facebook page." Why a new one? Why didn't you use the previous one created by students in 2010? You are not using the "Waste = Food" concept... "Vanessa and I created a Facebook page that we have invited our fellow students to join. Vanessa and I each focused on different aspects of Barcelona. I posted articles on environmentally friendly living in the city. " Where is that page? URL? Why couldn't I find it in the whole report? Please, fix, asap. 1.2. Why Why didn't you coordinate with the other students that you were discussing about this type of action some months ago? They created some blogs. Why not coordinating with them, instead of going alone with Vanessa creating this facebook page? 1.2.1. SWOT: Please, extend, and improve. Read more what other students are doing, and what previous students (previous semesters) did, etc. 1.2.2. Feedback loops: missing. 1.2.3. How many written feedback did you receive from your facebook page? 1.2.4. "The potential costs are time. It takes time to find articles and information but these time restraints are minimal. " How much time per week? How many people? What about re-posting content at the sustainability club? ... what about the risk that the this page is discontinued because students prefer to use an integrated FLOSS website which also has forms for activities, ecoeuro accountancy, rss-based automatic and periodic communication with other websites, etc.? 1.3.1. "This action does not provide waste. We are not using any paper or resources other then the internet. " Well, but you are producing information waste, either your facebook page, or the one created last year, or the blogs created before you created your facebook page, or the Sustainability Club Website, etc. 1.3.3. "The incentives are that you are sharing and providing information. I think people will want to use the site because it's a good source of information. " How many people contributed? If too little, which incentive would be appropriate? In case of considering ecoeuros, how many would be enough, according to your opinion? (see the list of ecoeuros at the sc web site: http://club.iesbarcelona.org/ecoeuros ) 1.3.4. "We are notifying the president of the sustainability club that we have made a facebook group so others in the club can post if they want to. " I'm a member of the SC (as faculty), and I got no information about your action, of that facebook page. Remember this for the future, you'd better avoid bottlenecks to spread information. Even the most skilled and proactive person can be a bottleneck the a system grows to a higher scale, like in this case, when the president seems not to have enough time to spread information with "its bases" that cannot attend to the face-to-face meetings. In this context, remember that you were offered to post this type of information in the sustainability course website, and also, all registered users of the SC website have access to post on a common and public forum, which automatically sends emails to some groups of users notifying of such new messages in the forum, etc. 1.3.5. Read the issues with the similar action from past semester. That wasn't continued, and you didn't even know about it. How did you design your action to avoid repeating the same mistakes they maight have made? 1.3.6. empty: fill it in. 1.3.7. weird html code shown. Indicate in clear text, at least, what is the copyright license of your work. For html widgets, you can use the HTML plugin:+ {HTML()} widget or html embed code here {HTML}. & 1.4. "I chose this copyright because I want people to be able to share and continue the action after we leave barcelona." Placed in the wrong section. 1.5. References: see previous comments (similar action in previous semesters, alternative websites with similar goals from other students or the SC website, etc). And "Emmanual. "Recycled Water «."
